SHEA Drain and Sewer

SHEA (Safety Health and Environment Awareness) Drains & Sewers is a drainage industry, entry level certification card from Energy & Utility Skills developed in association with the National Association of Drainage Contractors. The SHEA Drains and Sewers scheme is partnered with CSCS to allow drainage and sewerage industry workers access to construction sites for purposes of utilities work, without the need for a separate CSCS card.

SHEA has been developed in conjunction with industry to provide a uniform approach to health, safety and environmental awareness training across the utility sector, in line with Health and Safety Executive guidelines. This card is intended to be employed as a basic site awareness certification.

The content consists of six core modules and two specific to the drainage and sewerage industry. All individuals will need to complete all eight modules and pass the SHEA Drains and Sewers assessment to receive the SHEA Drains and Sewers registration. The programme can only be delivered by trainers approved by Energy & Utility Skills.

Certified Drain Surveyor

The Certified Drain Surveyor (CDS) Course was written by the Water Research Centre (WRc) in conjunction with the National Association of Drainage Contractors (NADC) and the Environment Agency (EA). The course includes the latest information from the Manual of Sewer Condition Classification (MSCC5) and the Drainage Repair Book (DRB4). The CDS is certified by EU Skills and delivered by EU Skills approved trainers.

Certified Drain Surveyor training is more than just understanding drainage code definitions, it is aimed at providing an all-round appreciation of what drainage investigation means. We cover design, ownership, drainage law and remedial recommendations as well as drainage condition classification via CCTV (which is just one aspect of drainage investigation).

This course is designed to ensure that drainage surveyors carrying out CCTV surveys on domestic and light commercial drainage systems are working to the correct procedures and using the appropriate codes. CDS certification is recognised by water companies, local authorities, housing associations, surveyors and facility management companies amongst many.

Those of you who will be taking this course will need a copy of Manual of Sewer Condition Classification 5th Edition.

The course content includes the following:

  • Drain ownership and sewerage law;
  • Domestic drain design
  • Drain misconnections
  • Drain Components & Design;
  • Drain investigation best practice;
  • Domestic drainage classification coding;
  • Condition grading and the need for drain repair;
  • Selection and specification of the correct drain repair technique.

Jetting Awareness Course

This one-day EU Skills (EUSR) Accredited Training Course is delivered by NADC / NDA experienced operatives and covers all aspects regarding the safe use of high pressure water jetting units in accordance with the Wrc Sewer Jetting Code of Practise. This is a safety awareness course and does not include any practical use element.

High pressure water jetting can be extremely dangerous. It is therefore essential that all staff expected to use this type of equipment receive appropriate and adequate training. Trained staff will have a greater awareness and appreciation of safe sewer jetting working practices with high pressure, high flow water jetting equipment.

Health and Safety Laws regulations, insurance companies, water utilities and major contractors all demand that staff have the correct level of training and hold current valid Certification.

Electro-Mechanical Equipment

This fully certified training course covers the safe use of electro-mechanical machines. It is based on Spartan which are the most popular in the UK but also includes all other makes including Ridgid, Monument, Rioned & Trojan.

This equipment is generally used for cleansing or removing blockages from difficult to access systems or systems that have tight bends. Particularly suitable for cast and ductile iron systems. Incorrect use and lack of knowledge can lead to serious injury to the operator, as well as damage to the system being cleaned.

The electro-mechanical and milling training course is the only recommended training for this type of equipment in the UK.

  • Aim and Objectives of this course:
  • Identify & Select the correct machine
  • Apply the correct techniques
  • Be aware of the Health & Safety issues
